New science and tech building on York Way industrial site given go ahead
London – July 16, 2024. Real estate investor and developer Delancey has secured a resolution to grant planning permission to transform a brownfield site on York Way, Islington, into a science and technology building, with new jobs and training opportunities for local people.
In a planning committee meeting on Monday, Islington Council gave Delancey the green light to transform the industrial site into a vibrant employment space in Caledonian Ward, with nearly 1,000 new jobs and £68 million additional value per year to the Islington economy.
The development will see the introduction of a new commercial building with research, laboratory, and office space at 176-178 York Way, on the corner of Randell’s Road.
The development also includes affordable workspace for local businesses, a flexible community space, and improvements to public areas such as Randell’s Road and Bingfield Street with new green spaces, streetlighting, and cycling routes.
Commenting on the outcome, Nathan Watt, Development Director at Delancey said:
“One of the aims of these proposals was to extend the benefits felt by Camden and the King’s Cross area by creating a new employment hub here in Islington, opening new opportunities for local people. We look forward to continuing to work with residents, businesses and Islington Council to bring our vision to life”.
Through the project’s Community Investment Fund, a £150,000 fund which seeks to help solve social challenges in the borough, Delancey has begun funding two programmes with Vittoria Primary School and Elizabeth Garrett Anderson school in partnership with children’s mental health practitioners, NLP4Kids. The programmes provide students with workshops and therapy sessions to improve confidence, performance and attendance at school.
This is the first of several initiatives included in Delancey’s social value plan, with other initiatives including career workshops with other local schools, internship programmes and apprenticeship opportunities.
