Here East launches new electric fleet of shuttle buses across its campus
- Here East has replaced replace its old fleet of shuttles with new electric shuttles
- Provided by Go Ahead London, the move will serve to reduce emissions and create a more sustainable, greener campus
Today, Delancey’s Here East has announced the launch of its new all electric fleet of shuttles, as part of a wider commitment to creating a greener, more sustainable campus. The new fleet has replaced the old diesel-powered shuttles, providing a quickshuttle route between Stratford International Station, Stratford Station and the campus. The news comes following the Mayor of London’s announcement that all new buses ordered by Transport for London for the capital will be zero-emissions vehicles.
Provided by Go Ahead London, Here East will be introducing four BYD ADL Enviro200EV pure electric busses to the campus. Go Ahead London is the capital’s biggest bus company and has been spearheading the mission to introduce electric buses and the necessary infrastructure in London, working closely with Transport for London to improve the capital’s air quality. BYD is already the world’s leading manufacturer of all-electric buses having produced more than 10,000, and ADL (Alexander Dennis Ltd) is the UK market leader and one of the world’s fastest growing specialists in designing and building buses that meet the demands of modern operators.
Reducing carbon emissions and improving air quality has been a top priority for Mayor of London Sadiq Khan, as part of the overall London Environment Strategy to create a greener, cleaner London. Building on the success of introducing Europe’s largest electric bus fleet to London’s roads, Sadiq Khan last month announced that all new buses ordered by Transport for London with be zero-emissions, accelerating TfL’s goal of a zero-emissions bus fleet by 2034. Complemented by the introduction of the Low Emission Zone and Ultra Low Emissions Zone, London continues to spearhead the electric vehicles revolution through continued investment into electric vehicles and the necessary infrastructure.
Since its inception, Here East has strived to keep its impact on the environment to a minimum, such as operating off 100% renewable energy and our biodiversity strategy. Here East is renewing this commitment through the new strategy, Here East Planet, which commits to improving campus sustainability and developing new solutions to tackle the climate crisis. The introduction of electric shuttles is one part of the new strategy in reducing carbon emissions on campus.
Here East is London’s fastest-growing technology and innovation campus. Once the Press and Broadcast Centre for the Olympic Games, the 1.2 million sq ft campus is now home to over 4,500 academics and innovators, and is designed to foster collaboration, allowing tenants to collaborate, scale and grow at pace. Tenants include: BT Sports, Plexal (Here East’s innovation centre), Fiit.tv, Sports Interactive, Ford Smart Mobility, Studio Wayne McGregor, MATCHESFASHION and The Trampery on the Gantry who provide 21 studios for local artists and designers.
Gavin Poole, CEO of Here East: “We are incredibly excited to be replacing our buses with a whole new fleet of electric shuttles. Our shuttle service has always served a vital function for our campus, creating a quick and easy way for tenants and visitors to get to the campus and we are now proud that our service will now also be zero-emissions. It is crucial for us to recognise the actions we must take to reduce our overall carbon emissions and move towards the goal of net zero, and this new fleet is an important step for us in creating a more sustainable, greener campus.”
Councillor Mete Coban, Hackney Council Cabinet Member for Energy, Waste, Transport and Public Realm: “In Hackney, we’re committed to becoming zero carbon by 2040. Tackling the climate crisis means that we all have to take action – however big or small – to reduce emissions. It’s fantastic to see Here East launch a fleet of electric shuttles, which will help make this part of Hackney greener, reduce their impact on the planet and improve air quality in the area.”
